Each
grower receives a certificate from their County Agriculture Commission
listing the varieties and quantity
of fruits or vegetables, nursery plants, number of beehives for
honey, etc. An officer from Agriculture
Commissioner's office has inspected each farm and ranch. During
the market, this certificate is posted near the produce or product
so that the consumer,
market manager,
or Agriculture Dept. representative may confirm that the produce
or product is authentic.
An examination of the certificates of
the markets at Placerville, Cameron Park, Folsom, South Lake Tahoe and
El Dorado Hills
shows that there are hundreds of varieties of fresh fruits and
vegetables, fresh honey and beeswax candles, and other California
agricultural products like Emu meats and by-products. All
of these are available throughout the season.
Organic
fruit and vegetables are those that are grown
following the California
Certified Organic Farming (C.C.O.F.) guidelines. "Certified
Organic" means
the produce and the land on which it is grown has been tested
for authentic organic
practices. Growers can be "registered organic" which
means they are in the process of being certified organic.
Many
growers in the markets may display a sign saying "pesticide
free" or a similar phrase. The consumer
may ask what "pesticide free" practices the
grower uses. Commonly
"pesticide free" means the use of pesticides is
limited to the dormant season in the case of tree fruit or
no pesticides
at all in the case of annual
crops. "Pesticide free" does not mean
organic!
